Did you know that 2.3 billion people have nowhere safe to go to the toilet? It may not seem like a problem to you – you’re likely to have lived with working plumbing your whole life. harmful bacteria and illnesses can spread from the lack of proper toilets. Approximately 900 children die every day from diseases linked to unsafe toilets and dirty water.

Why Toilets Matter

Proper toilets are important. There’s no need to walk miles to collect (sometimes dirty and infectious) water, and they help contain deceases. Sanitation-related illnesses aggravate an already dire poverty situation; adults can’t work or go into debt just to buy medicine, kids miss school, and young girls stop school altogether once their period starts as there are no toilets or changing rooms available.

But that’s not all – working taps matter, too! In times of Covid-19, having the possibility to was your hands and practice proper hygiene is vital. But many families do not have the possibility to frequently wash their hands, if at all.

Who are Toilet Twinning?

Toilet Twinning is a Charity that, through generous donations from those with working loos, help impoverished families around the world to build toilets, gain access to clean water, and learn about handwashing and other hygiene principles.
By donating to Toilet Twinning, your toilet and/or tap is ‘twinned’ with the one you help build where it’s needed most. You’ll even receive an image and the exact coordinates of your toilet twin!

What is the Cheeky Panda doing to support Toilet Twinning?

As an official partner of Toilet Twinning, The Cheeky Panda wants to support the organization by donating part of our profits directly to the charity. Our goal is to twin 100 toilets within one year – giving 100 families and communities the dignity of a hygienic and safe toilet.

Join us in helping hundreds of families across the globe gain access to hygienic, safe toilets and taps to put an end to sanitation-related illness and death.

The Cheeky Panda US 2020: A Year in Reflection

Posted by Buzz Brech

2020 – Phew, what a year! But apart from all the eventfulness of the past months – which sometimes felt like one (March), The Cheeky Panda had quite aexciting year. All of our HQ Pandas have been incredibly busy, from creating new products to bringing them to your local store. We’ve grown so much that a total of 13 (!) new pandas have joined our team!

Naturally, we want to share all the good things with you. Here are our highlights of 2020:

January – Product of the Year

We were awarded with the Product of the Year 2020 in the wipes category with our Baby wipes! This was a huge honour and a big step forward for us.

The Cheeky Panda Bamboo Toilet paper

February – Nappies Galore

In February, we launched our eco-friendly and plastic-reduced
Nappies

March – Smashing Milestones

In March, we smashed our revenue milestones – twice! We might still be a young bamboo shoot in toilet paper world, but we sure had a massive growth spurt in March.

April – Learn Sustainability with Colin

In
April, we launched our animation channel on YouTube! Every month, Colin will explain sustainability and other important topics to parents and their little ones.

You want to know more about our channel? Find our videos here.

We also launched our crowdfunding campaign on Seedrs! We feel honoured that some many of you believed in us, contributing a staggering amount that helped us develop over the past few months, bringing us one panda step closer to make this world a little bit greener.

May – Hello World!

The Cheeky Panda is conquering the world! Well, sort of. In
May, we’ve opened our offices in China, and at the same time, we also launched our products in the United States! One day, we’re hoping that every little panda can find our products in their local stores…

June – We’re going places!

We’re not just launching in different countries – more and more stores want to sell our products! You can now find us at Tesco’s or Lyreco France, and
many brands have started using our products in their offices.

August – Going Plastic-free

Our HQ Pandas have been working hard to make our products as sustainable as possible, so we felt it was time to recreate the packaging of our core products – Toilet paper, Kitchen rolls, and pocket wipes! Officially launching on our platforms in August, using a zero-waste alternative for our bestsellers has helped us save up to 6.3t of plastic

September
– Some Showing Off…

In September, we represented The Cheeky Panda at the Natexpo in Lyon for the first time ever! Fans of eco-friendly and organic products were able to take a (very safe) look at our products and learn more about us

October – The Cheeky Panda meets BrewDog!

In October, The Cheeky Panda partnered with BrewDogFrom now on, you can sip your drink with our amazing straws at BrewDog Camden in London – the first completely vegan BrewDog! Learn more about our partnership with BrewDog in our video here.

Doing something good is important to us! In October, we decided to create three different teams within our company to raise awareness for three different Charities: Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the World Land trust and Toilet Twinning – and thus, Team Ocean, Team People and Team Earth were born! All of our HQ Pandas have been keen to help raise awareness and money for their chosen charities, and we can’t wait to see what we can do in 2021!

November – Name our Truck!

We won another award! The Cheeky Panda was awarded with the Sustainability Award by the Franco-British Business Awards.

We also now have 5 trailers bringing our goods to your local stores – and you got the chance to name the newest addition to our growing trailer family! We’ve also made another donation to the World Land Trust to continue balancing out all of our emissions.

The Cheeky Panda sustainable nappies

December – Awards, Awards, Awards

You might have guessed it already… More awards! In France, our plastic-free pack of 4-rolls  made the Sélection Bio, a prestigious selection of organic and eco-friendly products in France. And in the UK, we made the Sunday Times’ ‘Fast Track Ones To Watch.’

We also took part in this year’s Save The Children Christmas Jumper Day! With the help of many amazing The Cheeky Panda fans, we created a wonderful cozy Jumper for Colin and were able to raise a total of £782 for Save The Children  enough to establish and operate a Child Protection - Mobile Child Friendly Space in targeted communities

And finally, right before the end of 2020, The Cheeky Panda will launch a brand-new website!

A lot has happened in 2020, and The Cheeky Panda has grown way beyond our expectations. But we couldn't have done it without you! You helped us grow from a little bamboo sprout into a strong shoot - and we want to work even harder for you and our planet in 2021.

Know what is in your toilet roll?

Posted by Buzz Brech

If you follow The Cheeky Panda closely (which, let’s face it, you should), you’ll know that we’re big on there being no ‘chemical nasties’ of any kind in our soft and strong toilet roll.
But what do we mean by that? Why do we say it so much? Will we ever stop? Probably not. Because we’re proud of the fact that our products are as natural as they possibly can be, and have as little impact on your health, as well as the planet’s, as possible.
We thought it would make sense to tell you what is in a bog-standard roll of toilet paper, and why you should make the switch to ours. So, here’s a handy blog post, lovingly put together by one of our resident Cheeky Pandas…

Chlorine

Yep, that same stuff which makes your local swimming pool smell weird (but also kind of nice?).
Most conventional toilet tissue manufacturers use chlorine to bleach toilet rolls for that bright white colour. Chlorine isn’t great for your body or your skin, and it’s a hidden ingredient in a lot of loo rolls which not many people know about. It can release something called ‘dioxins’, which can cause serious health issues.
Not only that, it actually makes the cost of toilet tissue more expensive – just to make it white and look ‘nicer’. Think about it: have you ever even thought about how manufacturers make our tissue brilliant white?
The Cheeky Panda don’t use chlorine bleach. We actually use H2o2, or Hydrogen Peroxide for the those who didn't get a B in Science.
Despite the slightly intimidating name, Hydrogen Peroxide is actually eco-friendly and natural, meaning our loo roll is clean and free of damaging chemicals.

BPA

Some recycled toilet paper contains BPA (bisphenol A.), which can usually be found in plastic products. The reason for this is that some of the recycled paper used to create the toilet roll comes from things like receipts or fax paper.
While this could be considered a problem, using recycled paper is still much better than the option of using normal toilet paper – it saves energy, saves water and natural resources, especially trees.
The Cheeky Panda’s loo roll is totally BPA free, given that it’s made from bamboo and not old lottery tickets!

Tree Pulp

Trees have been used to create toilet roll for years. The latest figures have humans wiping out a very upsetting 270,000 trees a DAY to make toilet paper. That’s a lot of trees, meaning a lot of habitats for animals are destroyed, just so we can clean our bums.
The Cheeky Panda use fast-growing bamboo to sustainably create soft loo roll with little damage to the environment. Bamboo is extremely renewable, unlike other trees used, making our toilet roll much better for the planet.
We also don’t use panda food, they don’t like the bamboo we use, because they’re very picky.

LOADS of dust

Toilet tissue dust not only creates unnecessary mess in your bathroom, but it’s also not exactly great for you. Inhaling dust can be bad for your health, plus dusty tissues can agitate those with allergy issues.
Because bamboo fibres are smoother and longer, it means they trap less dust. That makes our toilet roll naturally perfect for sufferers of sensitive skin!

So, now you know a little about what you can find in your toilet paper, could we convince you to give ours a go instead? And if you already do, first of all thank you, second of all, could you convince your friends?
I mean you’re reading this blog post for a reason, right?
